CONS: It’s not a huge pool so if you’re not on top of your day, it’s next to impossible to get a pool chair after 11 am. so hard bodies were everywhere! We even saw Perez Hilton hanging out with his friends at the Ace all weekend! The Ace is also a dog-friendly hotel so there were lots of cute pups hanging out too. If you are at all familiar with Palm Springs, it is a very gay-friendly town, and the Ace seems like it was the hot spot for all the pretty people, gay and straight, and many were from L.A. And of course they had stick-on hipster mustachios if the mood struck you! On Sunday they even had an entire arts and crafts setup for guests, where you could bedazzle sailor hats, sunglasses, or make beaded and feathered jewelry. Each chair has it’s own shade attached and there are removable sun blocking discs that the staff puts out when the sun starts to get intense. The pool was awesome, and packed the entire weekend. Probably because they sell customized lotion at their spa. The mini bar was one of the most fully stocked bars I’ve ever seen with tons of liquor, and natural/organic goodies.
The little details made the room really fun and entirely different than any room I’ve ever stayed in before- a record player with records (we got an Elton John, Kenny Rodgers, Sexplotion, and a few other funny listens), flat screens in both rooms, canvas curtains and bedspreads that gave the room a definite hipster vibe, vintage posters, creative light fixtures, and a shower that has to be experienced… especially since it’s a full walk in with no door and double rain shower heads. Maybe it was the heat but the place is special and I would recommend it to anyone for a short 3-5 day stay. It’s a very beautiful place that gets into your bones. And it’s more than the suburban sprawl you’ll encounter in parts of the city. It’s more than just a gay mecca for the 50+ crowd. Palm Springs is more than just the kitschy mid-century modern place your parents visited. I’m a gay male traveler (it’s not a gay resort) in my 40s and I was in town for business, but I imagine that anyone in their 20s, 30s, or 40s would probably enjoy it. The location in South Palm Springs is definitely on the upswing. The staff was fantastic from check-in to check-out. I visited in November and it was too cold to use the pool, but the whole resort is focused on the pools. This is an old hotel (motel?) that has been re-designed and re-imagined as a trendy, hipster vacation spot. I really enjoyed my stay - the room was large, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was nice. There’s also a lively bar, a diner-themed restaurant and a coffee shop. Additional perks include weekly bingo night, a dog park, and outdoor fireplaces with lounge areas.
